Caldwell County Crossroads

Listings in Maxwell, TX

Welcome to Maxwell, a small, agricultural Caldwell County community at the junction of State Highway 142 and Farm Road 1966, between Lockhart and San Marcos.

Maxwell is a small, unincorporated community in northwestern Caldwell County, Texas, situated at the junction of State Highway 142 and Farm to Market Road 1966. It lies about eight miles west of Lockhart, the county seat, ten miles east of San Marcos, and four miles east of Martindale, placing it in the gently rolling farm and ranch country between the Interstate 35 corridor and the post oak prairies of central Texas. The community was founded in the late nineteenth century along the Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railroad, better known as the Katy, and grew as a small agricultural shipping point. For generations it remained a compact crossroads settlement with a post office and a handful of businesses, its largest employer a small manufacturer. The Handbook of Texas records a population of 185 in 1990, rising to about 500 by 2000, as the rural countryside around San Marcos and Lockhart attracted new residents. Maxwell remains a quiet, low-density community of homes, farms, and ranchland rather than a built-out suburb. It is served by the Lockhart Independent School District, with schools a short drive east in Lockhart. Its position between two growing cities gives residents access to employment, shopping, and higher education — including Texas State University in San Marcos — while preserving a distinctly rural pace. The San Marcos River, a regional recreation corridor, passes within a few miles, and the barbecue and courthouse-square culture of Lockhart anchors the area's identity. Maxwell suits those seeking acreage, small-town quiet, and a short commute into San Marcos, Lockhart, or the Austin metro beyond.

About Maxwell

Real Estate & Housing

Housing in Maxwell consists primarily of modest single-family and manufactured homes on rural lots, together with scattered farm and ranch properties across the surrounding countryside. The community's small scale means there are no large master-planned subdivisions; instead, buyers find acreage, older farmhouses, and newer individual homesites. Growth pressure from nearby San Marcos and the Interstate 35 corridor reaches the area, but Maxwell retains a distinctly rural, low-density character. Most residents own their homes, and the principal appeal is land, space, and quiet rather than subdivision amenities or density.

Austin lies roughly 35 miles north along I-35, and San Antonio is a similar distance to the south. The community's rural roads carry light traffic, and most residents depend on private vehicles for commuting to Lockhart, San Marcos, and the Austin metro.

Parks & Recreation

Recreation around Maxwell centers on the San Marcos River, a spring-fed waterway popular for tubing, kayaking, and fishing, reached within a few miles in Martindale and San Marcos. Lockhart offers a historic courthouse square and its well-known barbecue tradition, drawing visitors from across the region.
